Hi,
I am running the latest version of E-Prime 2.0 with Windows XP on MAC Parallels 4.0. When I first open e-prime and run a script, everything works fine. However, after exiting out of a script once, I get an error each subsequent time I attempt to run that script from E-Studio. The error happens at this point in the script every time:
If Display.CalculatedRefreshRate < 40 Then
Err.Raise -999, "Unable to obtain a valid refresh rate. Please ensure your display adapter is configured with the most recent and device specific driver.(Standard Display Adapter under Windows Vista is not compatible)"
End If
The e-prime knowledge base suggests that this means the device driver is outdated. However, this is not the case. I think this is evidenced by the fact that every script runs fine once, but then fails on any subsequent attempts until I restart Parallels. I submitted this problem to eprime customer support, but they replied that they do not provide support for people using Mac/Parallels. Any help/advice/shots-in-the-dark would be much appreciated. This issue is really preventing me from finishing some important scripts.
Thanks.

I side with PST Support on this one. Do you really expect a high-precision Windows application like E-Prime to work on a Mac, Parallels or no Parallels? Just spend a few bucks and get any simple PC! One thing I will say for PST, they have kept E-Prime's hardware requirements fairly modest, so I bet you could even find a cast-off PC for free that would serve well.

Here's another thought: If you really are intent on using a Mac in or your studies, then why not use PsyScope? PsyScope is made just for Macs, and is free. (And as explained in the User's Guide, E-Prime itself derives in part from PsyScope, so abandoning E-Prime for PsyScope would poetically bring things around full circle.)

| Thanks for the advice. We actually run all of our subjects on Windows machines. However, all of our home machines (used for coding, etc.) are Macs. I would agree with you that a cheap PC is an option. However, this problem is a very recent occurrence. Up until two weeks ago, E-prime had worked just fine through Parallels for over a year. I'm just looking for any ideas about why this problem might pop up all of the sudden.

Thanks for the clarification, that makes sense.
Just for the record, I do still side with PST overall on this. It certainly is convenient when, by chance, EP happens to work on a Mac, but if PST makes changes that upset that then they are under no obligation to make it work again (insofar as they explicitly make no representation that EP will work on Macs, as opposed to their false representation that EP2 has been compatible with Vista). OTOH, PST might still find it within their interests ot keep EP working with Macs, so this is worth bringing to their attention.
Also, it is worth seeing if other users have any insight into this issue. To that end, you may find more help at the E-Prime Google Group, http://groups.google.com/group/e-prime.

In my experience, EPrime 1.2 works OK in Parallels (on a MacBook Pro running Parallels 4 and on a new iMac running Parallels 5). However, I encounter the same "Refresh Rate" error as you with EPrime 2.0. Since it doesn't happen with 1.2, it's obviously unnecessary. The initialization script in EPrime 2 throws this error when an EBasic function cannot determine the refresh rate. It looks to me like the same problem occurs with EPrime 1.2, but it doesn't refuse to run and MAKE you quit; , it assigns a refresh rate of 0. This is one more reason to prefer version 1.2 to version 2.0, and another reason that I regret investing in an upgrade; I haven't yet found any good excuse to use version 2, which is still (imho) 'not ready for prime-time'
(BTW: I'm not running subjects on a virtual machine. Like lots of other people, I find that it's more much convenient to do much of my development work on relatively new computer with modern operating systems, where I also can use my other other software. I'll test and then run subjects on a bunch of older PCs labs running XP. I don't see any reason for PST to restrict the development platform based on (mostly timing) factors that only matter when running subjects. [a similar error seems to occur with EPrime 2 in XP mode in Win7.] In any case, experimenters always should log and review timing at run-time -- there no reason for PST to make our lives more difficult during development.)

| Sorry, but hadn't noticed this message was posed a few months ago, so maybe everyone already knows about it. Evidently, the problem was introduced in E-Prime 2.0 Build 2.0.8.22 (KB3848 - FEATURE: Detection of invalid Refresh Rate). I haven't yet tried to downgrade to Build 2.0.1.109. Does anybody know if downgrading helps avoid this problem in Eprime 2.0?

| Corrrection & update (my previous post identified the wrong build numbers): Based on my experience, the most recent version of EPrime 2 to date, Build 2.0.8.74, will NOT work on some computers (including Macs) because the refresh rate cannot be detected. However, the previous version, Build 2.0.8.22, WILL work on XP using Parallels, and on certain other computers (e.g.,running Windows 7) that show this problem. So try installing Build 2.0.8.22, which you can find here (and don't allow automatic updates).

I second the above post.
Our computer running parallels keeps getting the refresh rate detection error as well, and it looks like those download links mentioned above are no longer available, even after logging into our support account (they just go to the generic "buy" page)
If anyone has a resolution for this, it would be greatly appreciated.
