A researcher here wants to buy a laptop computer for running tasks in E-Prime. I thought this might be a good moment to get a current assessment of laptops that work well with E-Prime. My impression is that EP will work pretty well with just about any laptop. In order to use an SRBox it would also need an old-fashioned serial port, but it seems we can use a USB-to-serial adapter to get around that that.
I would be interested in hearing your opinions, experiences, and recommendations on current laptop computers that work with E-Prime.
Thanks,

| I have the same question. But my guess is that the refresh rate of the laptops (and most LCD displays) may not be enough to provide accurate timing parameters for E-prime. I do not know the answer and am looking for a laptop with high refresh rate monitor. But it seems the top of the line laptops (e.g., Alienware from Dell) have only 60 Hz. If the task requires fast presentation and RT, I think a laptop may not be a good choice. Please give me an advice.

| Hello all, I am not an expert on this topic, but I think this is very important to take into account the refresh rate of monitors when using fast presentations (primings in a lexical decision task etc.) as you say. Some colleagues just recommended to me to use old monitors and avoid LCD´s and (specially) laptops. Regards, Miguel

| I just wanted to update this thread and see if anyone has any good advice on purchasing a laptop for use with E-Prime. I'm disheartened by all of the problems there seem to be with refresh rate issues, as I do need good timing accuracy for stimulus presentation (although I'm not using especially short presentation durations). Most of the laptop monitors I'm looking at are LED... do these have the same refresh rate problems as the LCD monitors? It's been remarkably painful trying to get the refresh rate info from the computer sales reps. The idea of lugging around a CRT monitor to plug into the laptop seems really unwieldy--the whole point is to be more portable. Any ideas, advice, past experiences (good or bad) with specific makes/models of laptops running E-Prime 2, etc., would be appreciated! Sarah
